Super Power Saturday

It’s rainy out and just one of those “I don’t want to think much” kind of days”. I wanted to do a thoughtful Savings Saturday, but my heart isn’t in it. So, I thought I would share this week’s Trash Can writing prompt. If you could have a super power for a day what would it be?

I would like to be able to fly. Family and friends are spread across the country so my chances to see any of them are slim. If I could fly, I could take a quick trip to Florida, Michigan, or Washington. Of course, there are some other cool super powers, but if I only get one, it’s flying.

What super power would you like to have for a day?

Random Thoughts

I realize this is Saturday and supposed to be about saving. It was a long week with a lot of changes so I decided to vent a little and get everything up to speed. As you know from previous posts, I am a workaholic. I just took on another job which brings me up to six regular gigs (in addition to small stuff that pops up randomly). I am excited and a bit depressed. Oh, don’t get me wrong I am looking forward to the new position which is yet another one working from home. I feel selfish being depressed being blessed with all of these opportunities, but you know what? Six jobs and I still barely make the budget. Also, four are fairly volatile and could be gone in a heartbeat. One of the gigs already cut in half (but luckily the new position makes up for the loss).

It also seems many of my friends are going through a tough spot as well. So, I proposed with the nice weather to kick the “funk” as we call it to the curb and focus on the positive. We set small but attainable goals. I have decided to share them to keep us more responsible for meeting them. [Read more...]

Happy Easter and a Little More

Happy Easter everyone! We don’t do much around here to celebrate, but I figured there is no reason for a big blog post since most people are off celebrating. For those of you who are around, I rounded up some posts for you to check out:

1. I updated the giveaway page here at AGOF.  Find all of the current giveaways here.

2. Sister site A Goddess of Literature wrote a review on the classic War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. <pssst> Tell her Happy Birthday while you are there.

3. If are looking for a new smartphone and want in on a beta plan, you read more over at Finger Click Saver.

4.  This post from So Over This was the best one I read all week (and I read a lot). If you are like me and not sure where you “fit” in the blogosphere, don’t miss the post! (I think I may have to officially label myself a debt blogger.)

5. Stage iv posted The Wheelchair Caper.  Jessica’s survival story is inspiring.

6. If you are looking for an affordable blog conference be sure and check out Trash Can Bloggers. A full conference pass is only 70 bucks (individual courses are as low as 10 bucks!). It starts tomorrow (4/1). If you are worried about timing, no need, there are self-paced sessions available. Even if you don’t blog, there’s a work from home session available.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun-Turks and Caicos

Have you ever worked so hard you want to throw caution to the wind and just empty out your savings for an exotic vacation? Being a workaholic, the thought has crossed my mind on more than one occasion. I have found myself browsing for Turks and Caicos luxury resorts, Greek island resorts, and villas in Spain.

Currently my savings account will not cover such grand vacations and even if it did, my mature self (sometimes I hate her:) ), knows having a roof over my head and paying down debt will persevere over any vacation, exotic or not. To keep myself from being frustrated, I opened another savings account for my future trip. Right now I can only add five dollars a month, but the fact it exists gives me some satisfaction. Even better, I get more enjoyment when I search for my dream vacation. I have settled on wanting to go to the Turks and Caicos more than any other place. The resorts are so beautiful and look so relaxing. I am also very impressed with the landscaping, the clear blue water, and the overall good feeling I research. There is so much to do from sailing to water sports, any girl (or guy) can have a lot of fun.

When the debts are all paid in full and the piggy bank is fat and happy, I can’t wait to enjoy myself at a grand resort, sipping my drink (umbrella included of course), and a sunny day on a Turks and Caicos beach. I will go all out and enjoy fine dining, parasailing, massages, and going on island excursions. Somehow, someway, someday…

Teaching a Teen to Shave

Sometimes being in my forties feels old and other times I still feel pretty young. It’s funny how life events can shape how we feel about our age. Recently, my youngest child, who is 13 1/2, made me feel old.  Over the past year he has grown about six inches, his voice is getting deeper, and slowly but surely he is getting facial hair. I wanted to put off having him shave as long as possible. Oddly enough, it feels weird to have an 8th grader who shaves. Straight edge, safety razor blades, electric razors, so many to choose from. Which is best for a 13 year old? My 21 year old opted for an electric.

However, that patch of peach fuzz is getting more noticeable so it’s time for him to learn. My husband, his stepfather, hates electric razors. My ex husband loved them. On one hand I guess it doesn’t matter to me which one my son uses, but there is the part of me who knows middle school kids tend to be a little on the accident prone side (I learned this teaching middle school for a few years). Of course with his own father living out of state, it was up to my husband to teach my son how to shave. Therefore, it was inevitable he would be using a razor.

I told my husband to make sure he patiently taught him and to make sure he watched him closely the first few times. I didn’t want a kid with a bunch of cuts all over his face, or worse yet, bleeding badly enough to need medical care. In the end, it all worked out fine. He is using a safety razor blade and so far no cuts.

As for me, I may feel a little older, but I suppose I should be happy I still have a few years left to be a concerned parent. I know it doesn’t go away when they are adults, but it isn’t the same either. Shaving wasn’t my first, nor will it be my last worry as a parent. Another milestone in the books, my son has mastered the “art of shaving.”
