MBA Schools in Colorado

Heading back to college brings out a variety of feelings ranging from excitement to fear.  Today’s economy makes a college education more important than ever. However, for many heading into a classroom full-time isn’t an easy task. Online schools are more popular than ever. They are a great choice for those who are serious about their education and who have the self-discipline. One of the most popular graduate degrees today is an MGA. If you are looking at executive MBA schools Colorado is well-known for schools who offer MBAs.

As for myself, my master’s degree was going to be in education. As an undergrad, I was a single mother with three kids and chose a traditional classroom setting. When it came time to get a master’s degree, my work schedule wouldn’t accommodate a regular classroom very well. I looked into going to school online and it was a great choice for me. I had assignments and online discussions due weekly. I could work at my own pace to a certain degree, as long as I made the deadlines. It wasn’t easy, but I made sure I knew before I signed up and paid for classes what to expect. Here are some points I think are worth considering:

Self-discipline-I mentioned this, but it is truly the most important item to consider. If you aren’t sure you can make yourself buckle down and get  the work done in time to meet deadlines, an online college isn’t for you. I am happy I didn’t go to school online until grad school. I think if possible it is great to get at least a few initial classes under your belt in a regular classroom. It is a great way to “get used” to going to college.

Expectations-Be careful and don’t assume every school has deadlines and as long as you meet them you can log on anytime. Some schools have classes that meet online at set times.

Costs and Books-Costs can be higher at many online schools. Often it is assumed there is less physical overhead so it should be cheaper. Consider the number of people attending an online school is generally much higher and that drives up costs as well. Consider the cost of books as well. Shipping can make books much more expensive. Shop around online before ordering books from the school to see if you can find a better deal.

Physical location-Does the school have a physical location you can visit? This can be handy for tutoring, administrative issues (payments etc), and for group work.

I am sure there are plenty more points, but these are all things I kept in mind myself. I truly enjoyed attending online. For those considering furthering their education by obtaining an MBA or another degree, best of luck!

The Importance of a Good Financial Education

The Importance of a Good Financial Education

Most children have a way of living up to expectations, and if you expect your child to make responsible, intelligent decisions, the chances are good that he or she will not let you down. For instance, you probably want your children to grow up to be responsible consumers so that they do not spend their lives floundering in debt, particularly if you are afraid that you may end up footing the bill for their monetary mishaps.

Take Charge of Your Children’s Financial Education

It is one thing to expect the best for your children and another to actually provide them with the tools to succeed. If you want your children to grow up to be fiscally responsible adults, you are going to have to take charge of their financial educations. Schools may teach children how to count money and offer courses on how to balance a bank account, but they don’t teach kids much about how to shop wisely.

For instance, your kids will probably never hear their teacher advising them to use Nike coupons for their next athletic footwear purchase. It’s up to you to impart your smart shopping skills to your children rather than expecting the schools to do so for you.   [Read more...]

Financial Friday-Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is important for all of us, not just something we need to teach our kids. We can’t all be experts on everything financial, but we can make sure we have a general knowledge base on anything financial that affects us now or in our future.

Here are some categories where we can all make an effort to increase our financial literacy:

Retirement-Roth IRA, Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, 401k, 403b

Insurance- Health insurance, life insurance, property Insurance, auto insurance, disability insurance, long-term care insurance

Investments-Personal savings accounts, CD’s (certificate of deposit), stocks, bonds, mutual funds, collectibles, real estate

Budgeting-Make a budget and don’t spend more than you earn. There are several ways to break down where the money goes. One popular budget is the 60/10/10/10/10 budget. Household (food, bills, taxes)-60%, 10% retirement savings, 10% long-term savings (home etc.), 10% short-term savings (repairs, etc.), 10% fun money.

All of this and more can be learned by reading personal finance articles, blogs, and books. There are personal finance classes available in many areas as well. Another great resource are financially based radio shows that are also often available through podcasts. The resources are out there for all of us to take action and improve our financial literacy.
