If you have been working hard to get and keep your finances in order this year, do not break the bank during the holidays. Keep your finances in check during the holidays by being ready for Christmas shopping with a plan in place.
Make a list of everyone you want to buy for. After the list is complete, see if you can cut it down by either buying a group gift for a family, eliminating someone entirely (Do you really need to buy for your third cousin twice removed?), or consider making gifts for a few on the list.
Once you have the list also put down how much you are spending and what gift (s) you would like to buy for each person. Set a limit and don’t go over it! Do research before you head to the store (online or brick and mortar) to shop and see who is offering the best deals (coupon codes, free shipping, half off, etc.).
Finally, do not put your purchases on credit! If you can’t afford it now, you can’t afford it later! If you want to use your credit card to earn rewards, that is fine. However, pay it off immediately so you don’t accrue any interest. Christmas shopping with a plan is going to keep you from being stressed out and broke in January.
