Thrifty Thursday-Prepare Your Home for Winter

The weather is getting colder and it is time to prepare your home for winter. For around $50 it is possible to keep the drafty air from seeping inside. Put weather stripping around your windows and doors. It takes care of any gaps (along with caulking), even small ones that may not be easily noticed. Additionally, it is a good idea to put plastic on your windows. I honestly believe even with new windows it makes a difference. I tried one year with the plastic and one without it. The year I used the plastic, my gas bill cost me less. Draft stoppers in front of the front and back door are also essential to help keep out the cold air.

If you live in an older house that is especially drafty, there are some other methods that take a little more work, but are still affordable. Laurie (regular contributor here at AGOF) is trying at least one of these methods and she will do a guest post for Thrifty Thursday to update anyone who might be interested. Look for that post in the next couple of weeks.
