Thrifty Thursday-Freecycle

Freecycle.org is the place to go for a wide range of free items (TV’s, furniture, and clothing just to name a few). As the old saying goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

You will start by joining a local Freecycle group. This is where you can post items for others to pick up and also find items you may be looking for. It is considered proper etiquette to post an item or two before you start selecting items for yourself. Subjects lines should be precise:

Offer: List the item you have to offer and location (i.e. Do not put your street, simply put your city or area of your city if it is large)
Wanted: List what you are looking for and the condition (remember items are generally used and free so don’t expect pristine condition)
Taken: If your offer was picked up, let others know it was taken.
Received: You have received the item you listed that you have been looking for.

I haven’t used Freecycle a whole lot. Admittedly, I will go months and forget all about it. The last great deal I got on Freecycle was a rooftop carrier for my car. I didn’t want to pay $100 or even the $40-$50 I was finding at yard sales. I only needed it for one trip. I was moving back to New Hampshire from Florida. I was able to get what I needed (and it had only been used once before). I returned the favor by listing it myself after my trip.

The possibilities of what can be found on Freecycle are endless. Have a look around and see how it all works. Best of luck in finding your next treasure!
