Salem, Massachusetts is one of the best places in the country (if not the best) to visit during the fall. It fits in great with the Halloween season. We had been wanting to go as a family and decided to head out and combine it with a free museum day. We went to the Salem Witch Museum which was a disappointing experience. It was more of a small presentation of wax figures than a museum. However, overall I loved Salem (and I am not big on the Halloween season). Of course, Salem isn’t all about Halloween. It is rich with history. You can check out a replica of an 18th century sailing vessel, check out the Custom House at Derby Wharf. I will apologize in advance, it was a very cloudy day so the pictures aren’t as great as I intended.
Of course there are old cemeteries with those famous to Salem (and surrounding areas) history.
This crypt contains Martha Corey (spellings vary in the area) whose name you may recognize from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. She was one of 20 who died (19 hanged, and one pressed to death) during the Salem Witch Trials in the summer/early fall of 1692.
We were able to walk to all the famous sites in town. Unfortunately, due to time, I missed a few I would have liked to have checked out, such as The House of Seven Gables. The next time you visit Massachusetts, don’t miss out on Salem. There is so much history and beauty. It is well worth a day or two of your time, even if it isn’t the Halloween season!
