The History of Weddings

Getting married can be expensive. As thegraphic below shows over history the beginnings of a married life have cost a pretty penny! Just because it is “traditional” to buy a diamond, buy an expensive gown, and have a big party, doesn’t mean you have to do it.

I’ve been married twice and didn’t have a big wedding either time and I don’t regret it. Perhaps it is my frugal nature, but I would have been mortified to spend thousands of dollars for one day. If you can afford it and that is what you want to do, go for it. However, if you can’t afford it, think about it. Keeping it small and having a family dinner or cookout to celebrate may be just the right compromise. My most recent marriage was on the beach with a small dinner afterward and it was great.
