Financial Friday-Avoid Fees

I realize it is common sense for most to know it is best to avoid fees that many banks charge. However, how many people actually take the time to go check and see if their bank is charging them new fees they may not have incurred when originally opening an account? Many of the “big banks” charge checking account, atm, and other fees for various reasons. If you are not utilizing a debit card or a checking account regularly (or keep a low balance), be especially mindful.

Sure, many of the big banks have ways to avoid fees, but you have to keep close tabs and not forget to use the account a minimum number of times or make sure your average daily balance is x amount of dollars. For someone like me, this would be an issue. I have more than one bank account. I have one account I use for weekly spending and therefore the monthly balance is fairly low. I don’t want to pay a fee just because I choose to keep less money in that account.

Personally, I am a big fan of credit unions and community banks. They are less likely to charge fees and to treat their customers like human beings rather than just another way to make money. Regardless, there are small banks and credit unions who may be charging unnecessary fees as well. The best advice I can offer is to check your statements regularly and to see if you are getting the most for your money by comparing other banks (and credit unions) rates at least on a quarterly basis (bankrate.com is a good source for this). This will also help you find banks and credit unions that will not charge you extraneous fees.

We all work hard for our money. Let’s keep all of what we earn in our accounts and avoid fees we don’t want or need to pay!

Thrifty Thursday-Being Thrifty Doesn’t Mean Being Cheap

Being frugal and thrifty doesn’t have to mean being cheap. I admit, there are times I run that fine line in between. For the longest time, I was fine with my 3.2 megapixel cell phone camera. I am not one to take many pictures. However, I often want a picture for a blog post and it proves difficult. I either have to have permission or find a free picture (which can take up a lot of time and effort) or use my own. My own pictures have been pretty pathetic and lack quality.

I kept talking myself out of spending money on a camera until I lost out on a fairly large blog deal because of my lack of pictures. I finally decided it was time to spend the money on a camera. However, I also wanted to be smart about it. I knew a point and shoot would serve me well. I don’t plan on becoming a professional. I decided to be open to any camera under $200, but told myself go for quality!

After hours of research, I decided on the Nikon S3300 (16MP and 6x zoom). I remained true to my thrifty/frugal self and found the best deal on it. After weighing in discounts and bundles, I ended up purchasing it from Amazon (some credit I had on my account sealed the deal). I managed to get a bundle that included the camera, case, and an 8gb SD card for $101.00. I have taken a couple of personal pictures and the quality is MUCH better than the cell phone. I can’t wait to take some pictures this weekend to use for an upcoming blog post. This is a purchase that will pay off. Remember, being thrifty doesn’t mean you have to be cheap!

Bookworm Wednesday-House of Mercy Review

House of Mercy
by Erin Healy

Beth makes a mistake. A couple of them actually. The first mistake was one of mercy, where she decided that the ends justified the means. The second was seemingly innocent and innocuous at the time, until circumstances out of her control made a small error in judgement swell to an insurmountable mistake that cost her dearly.

I find Rose’s character so incomprehensibly cold to her own daughter that it is simply unforgiveable and unrealistic. There is no history of conflict between mother and daughter, not that we were made aware of at any rate, to explain how Rose could suddenly and unexpectedly turn on Beth.

Jumpstarting a Job Search

There are many ways to jumpstart a job search. First and foremost, a well-written résumé is essential. Once this is accomplished, it is time to start the search.  The internet has allowed the job search to be a lot easier and productive. Instead of spending hours handing out résumés at local businesses and making phone calls for jobs found in the newspaper, there are many websites available to search.

There are also temp agencies and staffing services that will provide long-term employment. Be sure and utilize these options when carrying out a job search. In addition to searching online and using agencies, the most popular way to find a new job is to network. Talk to friends, family, and former co-workers to see what companies they may be aware of that are hiring.

Do volunteer work (which can also lead to employment) or look at starting your own business. There are many legitimate work-at-home opportunities available today for temporary part-time income. While in limbo, these ideas are key to keeping a  résumé up-to-date.

Test It Tuesday-Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain

I was recently sent a great kit from Pillsbury to make homemade pizza! I received a baking sheet, pizza cutter, oven mitt, $10 Visa gift card for supplies, and a coupon for free Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust (Whole Grain). My husband (who is the cook) was especially ecstatic about the pan and pizza cutter! He has been asking me for awhile to pick up a pizza cutter (which I never happen to think of at the store) and our baking sheets were ready for replacement. This new baking sheet is awesome and nothing sticks to it!

On a fortunate note, the pizza turned out great! My husband expected the dough to messy, but was pleasantly surprised it was easy to work with. He added some pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni on top and it tasty. Unfortunately, our picture didn’t turn out very well of the finished product, but the pizza was good. My 13 year old liked it even though he didn’t expect to after seeing “whole grain”.

As a family, our honest take is we would purchase this pizza crust again as an occasional treat. It was quick and easy to make.  As for homemade pizzas, this is one of the better ones I have tried. Right now,  Pillsbury (through My Blog Spark) is offering a $1.25 off coupon for Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust with Whole Grain. Go ahead and print it and give it a try!

Update: We made this again and here is a picture!
