Thrifty Thursday-Do It Yourself

Do you know how to fix and/or do simple things around the house? How about fixing a leaky toilet, installing a ceiling fan, remove wallpaper, or even plant a garden? Learning a few simple skills can save a lot on labor costs. If you do it yourself, you will save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. There are many ways to learn these skills and more. Many home improvement stores offer low cost or even free workshops. Other ways to learn include books, online videos, or having a patient friend or family member guide you through the project.

Over the years I have thought about how much money I wasted on having things sewn for me, oil changes, and a few other items I could have-and should have-learned to do myself.

A few hours of patience and spending the time to learn will not only be thrifty, but you will be proud of the new skill you will have mastered. I made it a point to learn to fix a toilet recently and it really was quite easy. It also only cost $6 to do it. I don’t even want to guess what a plumber might have cost. Go ahead, go try learning a new skill to try around the house. You will be glad you did it yourself!
