If your employer offers a retirement plan be sure you participate. Many employers offer a match. For example, your employer may match the first 3 percent of any contributions. This is an easy way to save a lot of extra money for toward retirement.
Even if you don’t have a retirement plan at work, you can contribute to an IRA. There are several options and a lot of research to be done (watch for an IRA series coming soon). Even if you have a low income, make it a priority to contribute something. Even $25 dollars a month is a good start (ING Direct will let you contribute for as low as $25 per month). If you start out with a small monthly contribution, aim to make it more over time.
Also remember the earlier you start, the better off you will be. If you have a teen earning an income, encourage them to begin contributing to a ROTH IRA. Even if you are older and haven’t started, it is never too late. Anything you can save to supplement social security will help to improve your lifestyle in your golden years. Do the research and get started right away. Your future self will thank you!
