Test It Tuesday-Poland Spring Direct

For this week’s Test It Tuesday, I would like to share my experience with Poland Spring Direct. I am receiving deliveries for two months because I am lucky enough to be a BzzAgent! I had the option of getting bottled water or the water dispenser. I opted for the bottled water due to the fact we are in an apartment. We really don’t have room for the dispenser. In addition to the water, we received a case of Sweet Leaf Lemonade. I had not tried it before and I am now a big fan. It is so good! It is refreshing and it not too sour or too sweet.

We are loving the delivery service. It is so convenient to have it show up at the door! It is also a good feeling to know we have plenty of water on hand for anything that may come up (we have well water so we don’t drink our tap water). We had some storms last night and I had peace of mind we had fresh water if we lost power. No worrying about the local stores being out of stock (which usually happens with the threat of a storm).

We have another delivery coming this week. I am looking forward to it! I believe we will keep this affordable service after our trial period.

Monday Musing-Helping Adult Children Financially

Usually my Monday Musing comes easily to me, but this week I had to think what I wanted to write about. I finally decided to write about something I have given a lot of thought to recently. When should we quit helping our adult children financially speaking?

My daughter will be 19 very soon and my son will be 21 and they are both on their own (and both in different states). Although neither has asked me repeatedly for money or financial help, there has been the “hint” they are in need of it. On my own accord, I have helped my daughter out quite a bit in recent months. I had saved some extra money with an unexpected temporary teaching position this past year. I also know my daughter is pretty responsible with the money she does make, it is just limited at her age. Being on your own in another state isn’t easy at 18 years old (long story, but basically due to work and school). However, I know there has to come a point where I have to say no. If I keep helping, I fear she will start expecting it. Additionally, I am having to watch my own finances more closely these days.

On the other hand, I definitely have not helped my son as much. There are various personal reasons I would rather not discuss publicly (other than to reiterate there are no substance abuse or other illegal issues). Long story short, he really is not nearly as responsible as my daughter and he is a bit older. However, I have helped him in small ways a few times.

In the end, I have made a decision and am at peace with it. I prefer to keep that decision to myself, but I can say there is a limit and there is a point to say no to your adult children. You can always buy them a good personal finance book to get them on the right track!

Staycation Sunday-Window Shopping

It was rainy here in New Hampshire today and personally I had no money to go spend. This inspired me for this week’s Staycation Sunday and I decided to do some window shopping. I went to browse a couple of stores I have heard about, but have never visited. There was a store with comics in the name and therefore I assumed they sold comic books. They did, but it was a small part of their business. I spent a half hour browsing their cds, shirts, dvd’s, books, and novelties. I came out with a small gift, but for the most part I had fun just browsing. In the same shopping center, I went to three other stores I had never been to in the past. I didn’t buy anything but just looking around, finding new places in my area was fun in itself.

I had a pretty rough morning and the rain didn’t help my mood. Getting out and doing some window shopping did me good and only cost me gas (with the exception of the small gift). It was a great way to spend a Sunday close to home. Next time you find yourself with a quiet Sunday, head out and see if you can find a new shop or two to browse.

Savings Saturday-Reduce a Habit

Last week for Savings Saturday, I suggested cutting out one restaurant meal a month. This week, I have a similar challenge. This one may be easier…or not! I know if I challenged you to totally give up a habit it may be difficult. Therefore, let’s go for baby steps. I challenge you to reduce the habit.

Do you go to a coffee chain three times a week for a coffee or latte (or similar)? Reduce it to once or twice a week. Do you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day? Reduce it to half a pack. Do you drink a twelve pack of soda a week? Reduce it to six a week. Coffee is my vice. However, I only drink one cup a day (once in a great while I will have two). But, I have a bad habit of stopping at Dunkin’ Donuts twice a week for a coffee (or Coolatta). I can’t afford to keep doing this monetarily or physically (Gaining weight is NOT a good thing!). So, I am reducing this habit. For the month of August, I am buying a $10 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card for myself and when it is gone, so is the coffee. Of course I can (and should) be making it at home everyday. I do make it at home, but I am often multi-tasking and the coffee turns out terrible. I dump it and head to Dunkins on my way to work.

I figured I spent about $40 last month on coffee (Ouch!), but I was on vacation so it was higher than normal. Usually, I am spending about $25 a month. I am going to take the $15 I will save (Again, I only get that $10 gift card) and put it in my savings account. How about you? What will you give up and how much will you be able to add to your savings account?
