Savings Saturday-Where to Keep Your Emergency Fund

This week’s Savings Saturday is where to keep your emergency fund. It’s great when you commit to save money. The hard part isn’t deciding to save or actually doing it. Most people “fall off the wagon” so to speak because they leave their savings a little too accessible. Many of the financial experts will tell you to keep your money where you can get to it quickly in case of an emergency. I recommend this as well. However, what I don’t recommend is keeping your savings and checking at the same institution. It is far too easy to want to make that one or two step transfer. This can be especially dangerous if you use your bank or credit union’s online app on your phone (Thanks Laurie for the suggestion). Like I said, way too easy to make a transfer from savings to checking.

For many, an online bank works well for savings. Transfers usually only take two days which makes it easy to get to your money. Due to the short wait, it also helps avoid impulse spending. Additionally, online banks often have a higher interest rate (Just think you can make a whole 1% or so on your money, rather than the half a percent or less at your brick and mortar credit union or bank).

A great comparison site is bankrate.com (Bankrate is NOT sponsoring this post, I simply think they have great info). You can see what online banks and brick and mortar locations have to offer to meet your needs.

Saving money isn’t easy. Once you make the commitment, be sure and keep it safe for an emergency (and I do mean emergency).

Did you miss the last Savings Saturday?

Dieting on a Budget – Part 4

I have a sweet tooth. I know it. I admit it. I indulge it. Daily. I pay attention to serving size. If four cookies are a single serving, I only eat four cookies. One pop tart is a serving. I save the other pop tart in the pack for later, or give it to my daughter. If I don’t feed my sweet tooth, I end up feeling deprived and then a junk food binge is more likely.

You will notice that I don’t include dinner in my menu plans. Since most people eat dinner with their families without also subjecting the entire household to a low calorie plan, I have left dinner up to the individual. Eat whatever your family is having. Each menu plan will list how many calories the other 5 meals have consumed and how many calories that would be left for dinner, based on a 2000 calorie daily intake.

Thrifty Thursday-Road Trip

This week’s Thrifty Thursday is all about being frugal while on a  road trip. As many of you have read this past week, I will be driving from New Hampshire to Michigan. Here are just a few ways I am planning in advance to avoid unnecessary expenses on the road.

Pack a cooler of food and drinks-No need to stop at restaurants along the way. I spent less than ten dollars purchasing food for the road. I would have easily spent more than that on one meal at a fast food restaurant.

Filtered water bottle- Most rest areas have a water fountain. We can refill our water bottles free!

First Aid-Pack a first aid kit and be sure to include suntan lotion. If you have to stop for any of these things on the road you are bound to pay top dollar.

Get the car road ready- I took the car in for an alignment, rotation, and oil change. It is only two years old, but I let my automotive shop know I would be traveling so they did a free 12 point check as well. This all cost me a little over $100, but the peace of mind is priceless.

Use a rewards card for gas- I saved for this trip and don’t plan to put it on credit. However, I will be putting my gas on my credit card and paying it off immediately. I earn points towards rewards which in the end saves a few dollars. Another advantage of using the credit card on the road is safety. It is easier to dispute and have access to my money immediately if I fall victim to identity theft on the road.

Automobile Membership card-I am taking mine with me in case of a road emergency. I also know I can get discounts at many places by using it.

Hotels/Motels-I personally can complete my trip in one day. Most of my trip I am staying with my grandmother.  I planned in advance for a couple of nights in a hotel (I am sure grandma appreciates me not coming in late on those nights I plan on staying out). I shopped online for the lowest price. I also made sure to look for a hotel that included free laundry and breakfast.

These are just a few ways to stay thrifty while traveling. Vacations are a time to relax and have fun. However, if you are mindful of discounts along the way, you can come home with a few (or a lot) extra dollars in your pocket!

Bed Bug Education

Summertime is travel time. We all want to think of the positives when it comes to vacations, however we need to be aware of potential issues. One possible problem when traveling is a hotel or motel with bed bugs. No need to stress because education is the key.

The folks at Moxie Pest Control have put out a wonderful infographic that shows what bed bugs look like and where to look for them. Additionally, you can see what cities in the U.S. have the worst infestations and what professionals do to get rid of bed bugs.
